Graham Lawman’s Cambridgeshire based hay and straw business is continuing to gain significant benefits from the installation of a custom-sized, trade-approved Parkerfarm weighbridge. The 20-metre x 3.2 metre surface-mounted Eurodeck with 60 tonne capacity means it can readily accommodate the extra-long articulated lorries, as well as tractor-trailer and lorry-trailer combinations operated by both the company and external hauliers.

Installation of such weighbridges is very quick and straightforward, only requiring a suitably level slab of concrete with adequate level approach and exit areas. In this application the foundations were laid by the company, reducing install costs. The weighbridge was delivered in sections and lifted into place by the delivery vehicle’s integral Hiab crane. Large para-bolted steel spreader plates act as the load cell mounting plates and the compact nature of the stainless-steel canister load cells minimises the overall deck height. With the steel ramps specified the weighbridge was ready to use without delay and rodent proof load cell cables prevent unwanted damage.

The system features a user-friendly Parkerfarm DD1010 touch screen weight indicator, loaded with Agriweigh software and a TM295 ticket printer. After installation, the system was stamped ‘legal for trade’ using Parkerfarm’s special calibration vehicle.

The Lawmans are very pleased with their investment: “Running our own weighbridge has brought two main benefits. Firstly, for our own trucks, we are saving time and money by eliminating detours to public bridges. Secondly for sales using external hauliers, the net weight is known before leaving our yard. This allows faster invoicing and sometimes payment is received before the vehicle is out of the gate!

As well as the hay and straw business, the company also operates a mixed farming enterprise consisting of 60ha (150 acres) of grass, 182ha (450 acres) of arable crops and 400 head of beef cattle.

As Parkerfarm’s Mark Spick concludes: “Specialising in agricultural weighing applications means that our systems are designed with the farm environment in mind and this custom application demonstrates our versatile manufacturing capabilities. Agricultural operations of all sizes can benefit from accurate vehicle weighing.
